Land to the east of Springfield Road has been targeted by Miller Homes which is planning to submit a bid to build in “the coming weeks.” The News last week revealed the intentions of two major developers — Miller Homes and Wallace Land Investment and Management — to invest in Barrhead.

Details about the multi-million development remain sparse however Miller was able to confirm its intention to build on the land, saying it would be focusing on the construction of family homes.

A spokeswoman for the firm said: “We are planning a development of up to 150 high quality, family homes off Springhill Road in Barrhead, and will submit our planning application to the local authority in coming weeks.

“We seek development opportunities in suburban areas we deem to be appropriate for the homes we typically build and sell, and as such Barrhead is an attractive proposition.” Around 1,000 homes are to be built to the south of Auchenback on former farmland which has been marked for development by East Renfrewshire Council.

The includes “brownfield” sites stretching from Springhill Road, along Springfield Road, to Aurs Road at the opposite end of Auchenback.

The development, dubbed ‘Barrhead South’, is also expected to include a new train station on the Neilston to Glasgow line, and Transport Scotland and Network Rail, the operators of the line have already indicated that there is sufficient demand for a station to be built.

As part of a City Deal agreement with Glasgow City Council, East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) will get a £44 million share of a £1 billion funding pot to add to infrastructure in the area — the lion’s share of which is expected to be in Barrhead.

The proposed Barrhead South developments could be built around a new link road to the M77 motorway, as well as the new train station which come under the city deal funding.

The details of Wallace Land Investment and Management’s application have yet to be revealed, and when The News contacted the Edinburgh-based company for more information a spokesperson said: “At the moment all of the available details are included in the PAN notice and a more detailed planning application is not available. The whole area is due to receive around 1,000 new homes and our application will represent a portion of that.” Wallace are applying to build in land to the south of Springhill Road at the five way junction between Springfield Road and Springhill Road.
