Wild winds battered Barrhead on Thursday night amid amber weather warnings for high winds, rain and snow from the Met Office.

And concerned residents contacted The News about a dangerously swaying tree in Carlibar Park next to the primary school.

Within hours of the concerned resident contacting The News, a different tree had crashed through the school’s boundary walls and into the playground.

A picture taken from inside the school shows the scale of the damage and the size of the tree that fell, potentially endangering children.

No one was hurt in the incident as the tree fell when the school was in session.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire Council said: “A tree on Levern Walkway fell into Carlibar Primary playground. It knocked down some of the perimeter wall. It did not fall onto the school and the school is not damaged. No-one was outside in the playground at the time and pupils had been kept inside all day.

“Parents were texted and asked to pick their kids up from the front of the school.

“No-one was ever at risk.

“We had received no reports of this particular tree being dangerous. If a dangerous tree is reported to us we make it our priority to inspect it. If there is any sign it is dangerous we take it down.” Residents took to social media to discuss the damage to the town that they had experienced in witnessed in the freak weather that saw gales of up to 75mph hit Barrhead.

Jane Wilson from Main Street shared this picture of a supermarket sign that had blown off, saying: “Lidl sign got blown away was in the middle of the road this morning.” Meanwhile, Samantha Munro had a close call after a roof tile crashed through a bedroom window, showering children’s toys in glass and broken slate.

Less than a week later and arctic temperatures descended on the town and up to two inches of snow fell, causing delays on roads and rail.

However, residents made the most of the snow and sent in pictures of some of their snowy activities, including building snowmen and making snow angels.
