Primary six Maria McEwan has joined 11 other East Renfrewshire pupils in having her picture feature on the council’s road safety calendar.

Young Maria’s design was chosen out of more than 1,000 entries to the popular competition, which has become a school staple for the past 30 years.

As well as having her work seen by thousands, Maria has also received a voucher and certificate to show for her efforts.

The talented dozen were invited to the East Renfrewshire Council chambers for a special presentation event with Provost, Alastair Carmichael. The Provost dished out the prizes at the private ceremony which was attended by the winner’s parents and teachers.

Provost Carmichael said: “What wonderfully creative and talented young people we have in our schools.

“The standard of entries is always extremely high and it’s so hard to choose the 12 calendar pictures from the 1,000 or so our primary school pupils create.

“The road safety competition has proved very popular every year since it began in 1984. Very many congratulations to all our winners.” Kirkhill Primary were the overall winners, and received the Rowan Quaich for being the best-performing school in the contest.

As well as homes, the calendars will hang in schools, libraries and public buildings.
