The visit included a behind-the-scenes look at the warehouse, where they learned the different ways the supermarket recycle food waste and packaging.

Barrhead Scout Group were also taught about healthy eating and the importance of being responsible with money. The newly opened Barrhead store has a large range of products on offer for affordable prices and the scouts were staggered to see how far their pocket money could go towards their favourite treats and snacks.

Claire Rennie, Community Life Champion at Asda Barrhead, said: “We have had a really enjoyable morning with the children from Barrhead Scouts to help them learn more about the food they buy and where it comes from.” “We also wanted to present the scouts group with an £150 donation to help fund their future activities and, as we work with the scouts frequently, we know what a massive difference this will make to them.” Janet Campbell, Group Scout leader, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the Scouts to develop not only their knowledge of healthy eating but also their understanding of how a supermarket works. We were also stunned when they wanted to donate £150 to us as well. This will make a huge difference to the group and means we will be able to keep funding activities going forward.” The group also held a fundraising Christmas Fair in Barrhead’s Scout Hall at the end of last month.

The hall has been undergoing repairs for more than a year and a half, with the group battling to raise vital cash to bring the aging structure bang up to date.

So far they have ploughed more than £50,000 into renovating the hall, with grant money coming from multiple sources including Whitelee Windfarm.
