Proposals for a new area of Barrhead, known as Barrhead South will be presented to elected councillors this week at a meeting of East Renfrewshire’s full council. Should the proposals be approved then a public consultation will take place before plans receive final approval, which could see the construction of over 1,000 new houses get underway.

The report, to be delivered by the councils director of environment, reads: “In arriving at the proposed Barrhead South masterplan layout, studies on transport impact, ecology, landscape, ground levels, flooding and drainage were commissioned a lead consultant working for the joint lient group.

“In addition to ongoing liaison with Council Services, consultations were undertaken with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, Transport Scotland, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Water, Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network and Glasgow City Council.

“A ‘Barrhead’s Future’ day was also held in April to consult with and advise the local community on up coming developments including Barrhead South. The consultation event was successful, and there were no objections registered.” The report lists a number of benefits that the council say will come hand in hand with the proposals. These include 1,023 homes including a bespoke affordable housing policy that addresses local housing need in Barrhead.

A railway station on the Glasgow to Neilston l ine and associated access, transport infrastructure including new junctions on Springfield Road and pedestrian crossing points and a new green network that will provide better pedestrian and cycle access to the Dams to Darnley Country Park, easy movement within Barrhead South and informal recreation and play facilities and a sustainable urban drainage solution across the site.

The plans can be viewed online at http://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=12785&p=0 and more information on the agreement reached by council officials will be available in next week’s Barrhead News.

So far there have been no objection to the plans published.
