Fed-up shoppers say they are at the end of their tethers over the constant stream of drug related issues on Barrhead’s busiest street.

This comes just a week after East Renfrewshire Council employees claimed that they could see illegal drug “deals” taking place from the windows of the authority’s Barrhead office.

Disgusted resident Angela Bradley contacted the Barrhead News this week to have her say.

She said: “I don’t know one single person who is not aware of what’s going on there, in relation to drugs.

“I’m not suggesting everyone has witnessed actual deals being done, that would be utterly ridiculous.

“If they (the council) receive a complaint about drug paraphernalia, they’ll arrange for it to be uplifted. Seriously? “What about engaging their brains and doing something to all-out address the issue, and take much-needed action against it?

“The Main Street has been the talk of the steamie in relation to this very problem, for too long, way too long.

“The general public should never feel uncomfortable in what was once a really nice place to be.

“The fact is, they have done for years.” Infact the Barrhead News has been covering the problem since 2008, when one of our reporters spent a full day as an anonymous observer on the Main Street and claimed to have witnessed deals happening with their own eyes.

Police have vowed to the town’s community council to continue doing their best to monitor and patrol the Main Street on a daily basis and at peak times.

Boots chemists have also said that they will continue to work with the community and local authority to reduce the impact of methadone distribution.

However there appear to be no plans to alter the times of distribution or move them at this time.

East Renfrewshire Council have said that they are increasing their warden presence on the street and liaising with officers.

Referring to the area behind the public toilets where it was claimed deals were going down, a spokeswoman said: “We are not aware of any incidents of anti social behaviour in this area and none have been reported to us, but these concerns have been passed on to the community wardens.

“We have not had any recent complaints about drug paraphernalia in this area. If we receive any complaints about discarded syringes we will arrange for them to be uplifted.

“If anyone notices any antisocial behaviour please report it to the local police on 0141 532 6284, or to our Community Safety Team on 0800 013 0076.”
