The street has been the centre of attention in recent weeks and shoppers on the street phoned police and an ambulance after the incident.

The 38-year-old man was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and treated for stab wounds, and a 33-year-old was arrested a short time later, charged with the alleged serious assault.

A police spokesman told the Barrhead News: “Officers responded to reports of a disturbance on Barrhead Main Street at around 10.10am on Saturday.

“Officers arrived at the scene and found one man with injuries to his body who claimed he had been seriously assaulted, “Another man was arrested a short distance away and charged in connection with the alleged assault.” It is believed that the 33-year-old appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday, September 22.

The 38-year-old is not believed to have suffered life threatening injuries and is thought to have left the Royal Alexandra Hospital after receiving treatment.

In an unrelated incident, police say that a 24 year-old man was arrested at around 6pm on Friday, September 19 on the Main Street for the alleged possession of a Class C drug.

A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal in Paisley.

We revealed last week how police had vowed to the town’s community council to step up patrols on the street and have both uniformed and plain clothes officers on the street as often as possible.

Community Councillors also took the decision to lobby Police Scotland bosses for more resources to be invested in the Barrhead area, while raising the issue of anti-social behaviour on the street to council bosses and retailers.
