Residents had feared that there could be a fatality at a proposed set of traffic lights to be installed close to the junction of Neilston Road, Lochlibo Road and Kelburn Street.

Bellway Homes are currently building detached and semi-detached houses at the Westgrove development situated at the former garage site, which had been lying derelict for several years.

Following a number of accidents there, residents were fearful that the junction could become an accident blackspot if the developer went ahead with its proposed siting of the new traffic controls.

Their concerns initially surfaced during public consultation meetings and grew following the occurrence of accidents after work got under way at the site. However, they have not fallen on deaf ears. Bellway have revealed that they are now set to re-site the lights and crossing.

Local councillor Danny Devlin believes the housing company are doing the right thing by listening to the concerns of those living nearby.

He said: “Safety at this site is paramount and they should go with whatever is the safest option.

"There have already been four smashes here in the past year or so, which is totally unacceptable.

“Residents have been concerned about safety at this section of road since before the development started so if the lights are the best option then their positioning is crucial.” The new-build development is located on a sharp bend and there were concerns that, unless the planning was rethought, there would inevitably be accidents, with motorists being unable to see the lights in sufficient time to be able to stop.

To make matters worse, a stretch of road leading to the site has a national speed limit of 60mph, with many motorists failing to temper their speed accordingly before the approach to the housing site.

The £17m development has been roundly welcomed by the local community as the site had previously become problematic. It was used for a time as storage space by local bus companies but they moved out after parts of the premises became an illegal dumping ground. The roof of part of the property was then destroyed after thousands of car tyres were set alight.

A spokesperson for the housing developer said: “Bellway Homes can confirm that the re-siting of the traffic lights at Westgrove will commence in August and be completed by December.”
