This was the third year the school has taken part in The Big pedal, which is an inter-school cycling competition.

Cross Arthurlie has entered two stages of the event and the teachers encouraged the children to cycle to school, wearing helmets , on two days - Wednesday, March 5 and Friday, March 14.

Junior road safety officers Cameron Craig, Emma Montgomery, Maria Mcewan, Yusuf Amin, Baillie Kinnear and Sarah Stapleton were responsible for counting the bikes and scooters brought to the school and organising a cycle obstacle course in the playground.

In all, 181 bikes and scooters were counted on the wednesday and 215 on the Friday.

Cross Arthurlie achieved its Cycle Friendly status from Cycle Scotland in September 2010.

The school is committed to developing cycle skills and road safety awareness for its pupils and sets a very high standard.

The youngsters have achieved high success rates, with the majority achieving an A grade pass.

For a number of years the school has had a p5 after school cycle club where pupils can achieve the Bike ability Level 1 award.

There is also an on-the-road Bikeability Level 2 training for p6 pupils.
