A SUCCESFUL housing association has been celebrating 25 years helping the people of Barrhead this week.

Since 1987, Barrhead Housing Association on Main Street has provided residents with affordable places to live - securing a place in the heart of the community.

East Renfrewshire\u2019s Provost Alastair Carmichael said: "For quarter of a century Barrhead Housing Association has made an invaluable contribution to the local community by providing quality, affordable rented housing.

"Today it owns over 880 flats and houses throughout East Renfrewshire mainly in Barrhead, Neilston, Newton Mearns and Thornliebank."

A commemorative plaque marking the event was unveiled by staff and the provost.

The complex was built by Scottish Homes 25 year ago and transferred to Barrhead Housing Association in 2001 as part of a stock transfer of 245 homes within Barrhead, Neilston and Thornliebank.

Three residents, Mr and Mrs Dunwoodie and Mrs Kavanagh have lived in the complex since it opened. Over recent years, the Association has spent approximately £380,000 upgrading the complex with new windows and doors, kitchens, disabled showers, central heating boilers, door entries, the warden call services and installing the lifts earlier this year giving access to the first floor flats.

The association has also introduced IT equipment and Wi-Fi, embarked on new classes for using the computers and this month set up a physical activity class to keep the elderly residents active.

Speaking about the celebrations, Mrs Kavanagh said: "We have enjoyed a reminiscence session today from David Marshall, lunch and entertainment from the Association, and on behalf of the residents we'd like to say a big thank you to the Association for looking after us today.

"I really and truly have enjoyed my time with Barrhead Housing Association. I've got no complaints at all. All the staff are very nice. I have been very fortunate and love my house, and it's so close to the shops and my family are close by too."

Provost Alastair Carmichael continued: "It also provides accommodation for general and specialised housing including sheltered housing, wheelchair housing and housing for the elderly. On behalf of East Renfrewshire Council I would like to congratulate Barrhead Housing Association on celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The Association's Chairperson Rena McGuire thanked all the guests for coming along and helped the Provost present the long serving residents with a small gift.
