Cowan Park progress
THE bold bid to transform Barrhead's century-old Cowan Park into a showpiece East Renfrewshire leisure amenity has taken another crucial step forward with a Lottery application aimed at gaining £100,000.
The Friends of Cowan Park group has been set up to help organise a campaigning effort to boost both the environmental management of the land and the community facilities available there.
And it dovetails with council efforts to create a state of the art community sports hub which could see the park become Barrhead's main social and leisure amenity - a place able to appeal to everyone from soccer-mad youngsters to mums with kids and pensioners.
A refurbished bandstand, and the possibility of creating a modern performance space in the park, is also on the ambitious agenda.
The next public meeting of the Friends group is on Saturday, January 21 at the Voluntary Action base (beside Barrhead's Tesco) at 10.30 am - and all interested groups and individuals are welcome to attend to give their views.
