Slashed on Main Street
A MAN was brutally slashed in the face in what police are treating as a targeted attack outside Farmfoods on Barrhead Main Street.
The 29-year-old victim needed nine stitches for his wounds, after what's seen as a highly unusual assault carried out in plain view in the town's busiest thoroughfare.
Horrified shoppers watched in disbelief as the injured man staggered from the force of the blow, and an ambulance crew was quickly on the scene on Thursday January 5.
While police are still investigating the horrific stabbing of a man in the town's Saunders Court last year - again in broad daylight - violent daytime incidents in the town's main shopping forum are extremely rare.
But the attack is the latest in a string of knife crimes which have fuelled calls for mandatory jail sentences for people who carry bladed weapons.
A spokeswoman for Farmfoods said while she was aware the attack had taken place from the accounts given by shocked customers she hadn't witnessed the incident, which was over very quickly.
The thug who carried out the attack, which happened around 10.15am is described as 38 to 43-years-old and was wearing a black beanie hat, black jacket and denims.
Police have carried out high visibility patrols in the area since the incident, but have stressed it was not a random assault and that they are pursuing a definite line of inquiry.
Anyone with information about the attack is urged to contact Barrhead police office on 0141 532 6200.
