Wages rise in East Ren - but neighbours suffer
EAST Ren wages rocketed by more than 10 per cent over the last four years while pay packets in Paisley shrank by nearly a fifth.
The figures, from a report by trade union GMB Scotland, appear to show a widening gulf in the two areas' fortunes, and has prompted Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Douglas Alexander to demand his area should be made a special case. But it isn't clear from the report how much of the supposed rise in East Ren is due to high-paid white collar work, concentrated largely in Eastwood, or whether the rise continued after the start of the recession.
And it isn't known whether Barrhead and Neilston, making up around a third of East Renfrewshire, is achieving the same apparent success - or floundering like Paisley.
Around a quarter of full time workers in East Ren are said to be in senior or management posts, while in Renfrewshire it's just over half that number.
GMB Scotland says the figures show the country continues to be mired in recession.
