Ready for China experience
A BARRHEAD pupil is hanging up her school tie to embark on a trip-of-a-lifetime.
St Luke's 6th year pupil Tessa Jones will be travelling to China next August to spend a year as a voluntary teacher, specialising in English.
Tessa will be taking a gap year with the educational volunteering charity, Project Trust.
The charity helps young people like Tessa experience life in one of 23 countries in places including Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, not just as a jet-setter but as a respected member of the community.
The 17-year-old said: "I am incredibly excited about the project and I can't wait to immerse myself in another culture and become part of a community different to the one I am used to.
"I'd be grateful for any support this year with my fundraising, whether that's with ideas for raising money, participation in sponsored events or a donation.
"No matter how small it is, my challenge will be to raise £5,000."
The long-term projects will give Tessa ample time to investigate and explore the wonders and different cultures of the country.
Tessa will find out her exact project in March 2012. There are various different regions Project Trust send volunteers to.
She will be working in a state middle school, teaching pupils from the age of 14 to 17 roughly 17 lessons a week as well as helping the current teachers improve their English skills and setting up music, art and drama clubs for the students.
The 6th year student will be fundraising throughout the rest of the year and 2012 through various events such as her very successful Halloween fundraiser, which was held in St John's church hall on October 14. It raised a large sum of money which will be going towards the cost of her voluntary gap year.
Tessa's fundraising events also included her running the 10k Great Scottish Run in September. To make a donation go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/TessaJones or to find out more about Project Trust and the opportunities available visit www.projecttrust.org.uk.
