SCENE: Hurlet Road was closed for seven hours after the crash

By Ewan McInnes

THREE men were rushed to hospital after a serious road crash with one passenger cut from a car and taken by air ambulance.

The crash happened on the notorious A726, one of Scotland's most dangerous roads, near to the Toby Carvery on Hurlet Road, Barrhead.

The accident involved a Hyundai Coupe and a Vauxhall Movano.

At 7.35am on Friday morning a 24-year-old man was driving the Hyundai westbound towards Paisley when he is thought to have lost control and struck the stationary van which was being driven by a 60-year-old man.

The driver of the Hyundai was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley, where he is being treated for his injuries.

Hospital staff described his condition as serious but stable.

After suffering facial injuries in the crash, the 60-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Movano was treated at the RAH and then later released.

Two fire engines, one from Paisley and the other from Barrhead, raced to the crash scene to cut free a passenger in the Hyundai who was later rushed by air ambulance to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where he is being treated for a head injury.

He is also aged 24 and hospital staff described his condition as serious but stable.

One Barrhead motorist told how he was held up in the resulting rush hour traffic chaos as the Hurlet Road was closed and did not re-open until seven hours after the crash.

He added: "I didn't realise how serious the crash was until I saw the helicopter arriving.

"Most people who stay around here know this road can be dangerous and I just hope the people who were hurt will be okay."

The A726 which connects with junction three of the M77 is a notorious stretch of road and is one of the most dangerous in Scotland.

In 2007, a survey of fatal crashes and accidents showed the road to be the deadliest in Scotland.

Statistics revealed that the four mile stretch of road had 37 serious or fatal collisions between 2000 and 2005.

Traffic cops are continuing their enquiries and appealing for information following the serious road crash.

Constable Paul MacPherson of the Road Policing Department at Dumbarton is appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact his office on 01389 822000.
