A FIRST year pupil's generosity has brought a tear to the eye of a grateful fundraiser.
Mary Hill works at the Firs Nursing Home in Lowndes Street, Barrhead, and was recently out asking businesses if she could place an advert for the home's Easter Fete in shop windows.
The home is raising cash to take their residents on a trip to Blairdrummond Safari Park and Mary has told the Barrhead News that she was astonished when John Davidson approached her and handed over his pocket money.
Mary, has told how John of St Luke's High School, had been in the shop with his friends.
The 58-year-old said: "I was asking an employee of A & M Express in the Main Street to put an advert in his window for our Easter Fete.
"I also explained to him I was looking for donations to our tombola stall.
"A wee boy was standing there with two friends.
"He was pulling my coat and saying Mrs, Mrs, I turned round to look at him and he handed me £1.50 and said 'could you please give that to the old yins'.
"I said no at first, and said you buy your sweets with that pocket money, but he kept saying no please give it to the old yins.
"I took his money and walked away with a tear in my eye.
"I think it is fantastic what he did and I think it is unbelievable a boy of his age could care so much and he gives young people a good name when so many bad things are said about them.
"Because he was so generous I am going to keep him an Easter egg from the fete."
Young John revealed how he wanted to help the residents of the care home.
The caring 12-year-old said: "I thought it would be good to help out the old people in the old folks home.
"My friends were surprised I donated the money, but I have put money in the charity boxes at Tesco before."
John added: "I learned how to care about other people here at St Luke's High and at the Boys Brigade."
The Firs Nursing Home will host its Easter fete at 1pm on Sunday April 4.

Way to go John!!
It's great to see you get recogition for this - too often youth are condemned and we don't get to see their kind hearts.
You'll go far, whatever you decide to do in life :)

What a nice thing to do. this kid's heart is in the right place, and i bet there are loads more like him out there. i know young people can be annoying and disrespectful sometimes, but clearly its not fair to tar them all with the same brush.

Seems to me like John has been taught some pretty good values. Well done to his family, and to the school for helping raise a young boy to care about others. hopefully other kids can learn from his example.

i'm about to go and train to be a teacher, so it's reassuring to know that there are kids like this out there. all people ever seem to talk about is how bad kids are, and that can be really demoralising, so seeing one that does something like this is great news.

This kid must be one of the few i've seen doing something good, because usually they just loiter around the shops looking suspicious. right enough there's not exactly a lot for kids in barrhead to do. maybe if we had some facilities instead of derelict land and housing, we've have more great kids like this lad.

Proof that the kids in this area aren't all bad. As I always testify!
