NEILSTON Community Repair has won an application for more than 2,500 from the local area forum. The money is set to be used to return an electricity supply to a converted toilet block in the centre of the village.

The once-public urinals will be used as a new home for the community group which offers free garden and DIY services to people in the area who are unable to carry out or can't afford to do the work on their own.

The small block will be a centre of daytime operations as well as a storage area for some of the group's equipment.

The NCR team is made up entirely of volunteers and relies on monetary and equipment donations to be able to carry out the work that they do around the village and in the surrounding areas.

Some Neilston pensioners spent Christmas alone after their annual dinner event was ditched at the last minute because of a lack of funds.

However as backing from the community grows, the dinner, attended by more than 100, is set to make a comeback this year.

Neilston Community Council are making an early start in securing the funding by applying to the local area forum for a grant of 1,500.

And this week councillors voted to pass the application for the funding to be awarded.

No date has yet been set for the event which had become an annual tradition in the town up until last year.
