Tributes for tragic Gavin
A POIGNANT shrine made up of scarves and Neilston Juniors strips has been left in tribute to the young man killed in a road accident in the village.
Gavin Currie, 25, was knocked down at the zebra crossing outside the Killoch Bar on Main Street at 10.15pm on December 28, shortly after watching favourite team Celtic win an Old Firm clash - and died of his injuries in hospital two days later.
The fanatical Neilston Juniors member, nicknamed Spuzz by friends, had been crossing the road to get cash from a bank machine when he was hit.
And over the last few days the flag at the club has flown at half mast, while a one minute's applause in tribute to Gavin took place at Saturday's home game against Sauchie.
A spokesman for the club said: "He was clearly a man who was very well-regarded by the many people he came into contact with at the club, and his death has saddened all who knew him - it is a truly terrible blow."
Neilston residents have been left stunned by his death, amid claims that the area around the Main Street crossing is notoriously dangerous.
Staff at the Killoch Bar, where the mood among customers remains sombre, declined to comment.
His family, and girlfriend Lisa Walker, have asked for their privacy to be respected as they struggle to come to terms with their loss.
However Gavin's mother Margaret has appealed for the crossing to be made safer, while pointing out the weather was particularly bad on the night of the tragedy.
She said many people have been hit by cars at the same spot.
Meanwhile police have appealed for witnesses to the accident, while preparing a report to be sent to the procurator fiscal.
As reported previously, the 42-year-old woman driver of the Ford Mondeo car which hit Gavin was unhurt. It is understood that while Gavin, who was an electrician, was initially placed on a life support machine doctors battling to save his life had to accept there was nothing more they could do as his head injuries were so serious.
