NEILSTON'S famous Cattle Show is being put at risk by soaring costs and red tape regulations, according to delegates at a major national conference.

The East Renfrewshire event is the area's biggest early summer crowd puller, involving much of the local farm community in a major event which appeals to crowds who flock to the event from Neilston, Barrhead and beyond.

But despite enjoying a tradition nearly two centuries old the show is now posing a major challenge to organisers battling to cope with 21st century costs that are reckoned to be making the traditional way of doing things increasingly difficult to manage.

Along with several other flagship agricultural shows across the country the Neilston event is said to be under pressure as never before - thanks to increasingly strict rules which have raised questions about the viability of some of the country's longest-established successes.

Delegates at the Scottish Show Organisers' conference in Aberdeen heard that rocketing insurance costs, particularly for public liability, could push the cost of "many" shows to more than £10 million.
