Man, 50, killed in train horror
A BARRHEAD man tragically died after he was struck by a Glasgow-bound train while walking on the track near Neilston station on Monday.
The driver of the 17.14 Neilston to Glasgow train saw the 50-year-old on the track, and tried in vain to brake in time to avoid hitting him - but the train was too close to be able to stop.
The tragedy sparked a major local police operation and disrupted local train services.
News of the incident shocked Auchenback residents, who from the number of emergency vehicles in the area knew a serious accident had taken place nearby.
Eight police and ambulance vehicles mustered on Barrhead's Springfield
Road immediately after the man was struck by the train at around 5.30pm, and the police helicopter was also deployed.
However after investigation police declared there were no suspicious circumstances behind the death.
On Tuesday police were refusing to identify the man while relatives were being informed.
