A CARING volunteer has been awarded £2,000 for the selfless work he does in the area.

Alan Walker was shortlisted for a top award in a UK-wide volunteer scheme, run by airport operator BAA.

He was named runner-up in the 'Best Volunteering Individual' category for his 'outstanding work' with the Neilston Development Trust.

Alan, who works as a systems manager at Glasgow Airport, has donated his £2000 prize to the Trust, a registered charity, based on Main Street, Neilston.

The Trust runs a number of community programmes and events such as education programmes and live concerts for local residents and Alan is one of the founding members of the organisation.

As chair of the Trust he dedicates several hours a week to the running of the charity and was delighted to win the cash.

He said: "To get short listed for this award is reward in itself. However, to go on and receive a runner-up award is just amazing. I really didn't expect to get this far.

"The i-Volunteer awards is an excellent scheme and the £2000 donation will give the Trust a real boost."

Now in its fifth year, the BAA i-Volunteer Awards encourage and recognise employees who give up their free time to volunteering in their community.

The awards are open to all employees working at BAA's seven UK airports - Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, Southampton and Stansted.

Every entry to the awards scheme receives a donation of £200 for their chosen charity, with category winners receiving up to £5000, and second placed entrants receiving £2000. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, was thrilled to hear of Alan's success.

She said: "It is overwhelming to hear about all the good causes our staff have been supporting within their local communities.

"I am immensely proud of Alan and our many other volunteers who make a real difference in their communities."
