OLDER people in Barrhead can now benefit from a selection of free walking groups which have been set up in the area.

Developed by the Health and Social Care Partnership, East Renfrewshire Walking Groups are aimed at those aged 50 and above and cater to a variety of fitness levels with walks ranging from 30 minute routes to hour-long sessions.

The Barrhead group, Stepping Out, is aimed at those who are looking to start a gentle form of exercise and meet new people in the process.

Heading off from the ARC at 10.30am every Friday, the group enjoy a low level walk which is suitable for people of all abilities.

For those seeking more of a challenge, First Steps also based in Barrhead, leaves from Barrhead Foundry at 9.30am on a Tuesday and is a longer walk at a moderate pace.

Also taking place on a Tuesday, St Johns Strollers walk within Cowan Park from 10am and take part in strength and balance exercises.

Community health development worker Sine Delahunt, who organised the walking programme for East Renfrewshire Council said: “It would be good for more people to join us.”
