A NEILSTON mum has donated funds she raised during the London Marathon to a unique charity which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy.

Gillian McKinlay completed the gruelling 26.2 miles in memory of her running partner Andrea Kearney, who died from breast cancer in 2008, aged 41.

At the time of diagnosis, Andrea was expecting her fifth child and delayed treatment for fear it would harm her baby.

Now Gillian, 49, has donated a cheque for £1,500 to Andrea’s husband Peter, who set up the special fund after his wife’s death.

Gillian said: “Andrea and I regularly ran together. Some people just make an impact on you and Andrea was definitely one of those. We had a dream that, one day, we would run a marathon together but it was not to be.

“I am very glad I completed the London Marathon. I wasn’t too pleased with my time but long distance doesn’t suit me. At least I finished and I’m glad to say my legs weren’t like rubber.”

Joining Gillian in London to cheer her on during the marathon were her 14-year-old daughter Chloe, friend Amy McVitie, brother Ian Macaulay and his wife Susan.

Friends were able to track her progress on the Marathon app.

Gillian said: “Pregnancy and cancer are such a terrible combination. There is joy and excitement but also fear and uncertainty.”

Peter is full of praise for Gillian.

He said: “This is a fantastic achievement and we are extremely grateful to her for remembering and supporting Andrea’s Fund in this way.

“Her dedication to her running is amazing and it has paid off in a very special way.”

A number of Scottish celebrities, including Deacon Blue stars Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh, have backed the Andrea Kearney Fund.
