A MOTHER wept in court when her estranged husband was fined £200 for dragging her from a car and throwing her to the ground.

Kelly Boyd said she felt her life was “worthless” after her husband walked away with the monetary punishment after being convicted of assaulting her.

Scott Boyd, who works as a janitor at Barrhead High School, attacked Kelly Boyd, 37, following an argument over their children.

Boyd, 38, was convicted of the August 7, 2014, offence at Glasgow Sheriff Court last month and on Monday he returned to the dock to hear his fate.

Defence lawyer Pat Campbell told the court Boyd had been convicted of a “significantly reduced charge”.

The jury had previously accepted that Boyd had not grabbed her by the hair and kicked her as claimed by the prosecution.

Mr Campbell said his client was in a position to pay a monetary penalty.

Sheriff Kenneth Mitchell then fined Boyd £200, saying: “The court takes account of your previous criminal record, all your circumstances as set out in the social inquiry report and has regard to all that is said by your solicitor.”

Kelly wept in the public gallery, before shouting: “That’s ridiculous, that’s absolutely disgusting.”

Speaking to The News after the sentencing, she said: “I’m not taking it very well, it has made me feel like my worth is only worth that much.”

Kelly previously claimed her life had been ‘utterly destroyed’ by Scott.

Speaking to the Barrhead News after his conviction last month, she said: “I loved him so much, and I feel like he has taken everything from me.”

She told how the couple split after Kelly suspected Scott was having an affair.

During the trial the court heard that Scott had turned up on that day in August 2014 expecting to see his three children, aged 10, 12 and 15, but was told they were not there when he arrived.

They would chat at the door of their former family home before getting into Boyd’s car.

Minutes later Scott, formerly of Neilston, started the engine and drove a short distance around the corner before slamming on the brakes, and going round to the passenger side.

He opened the door and grabbed his wife, who was wearing a cast for a broken arm at the time, before throwing her out of the car and on to the pavement.

The incident was witnessed by Brenda Birchill, 47, who was walking past.

When asked if the man she was referring to was present in the court, she pointed to Scott in the dock.

She said: “He went round to the other side and opened the door, grabbed her by the arm or shoulder and dragged her out the car.

“I couldn’t see what happened next because the car was in the way.

“He got in and drove away and I saw Kelly on the ground crying.”

However Scott protested his innocence, saying Kelly “lost the plot” and started tearing the interior of his car apart as he drove.

He claimed she had lied to the court, saying: “She’s out to destroy me.”

A jury of five men and 10 women found Scott not guilty of grabbing her by the hair or kicking her, but returned a unanimous guilty verdict that he assaulted her by grabbing her by the body and pulling her out of the car.

After his conviction East Renfrewshire Council confirmed that he works at Barrhead High but said the court case didn’t have a bearing on how he does his job.

A spokeswoman said: “The outcome of the court proceedings is not related to his abilities to carry out his job.

“As this is a private matter for an individual we are unable to comment further.”
