Caroline Morrison, who was inspired by her autistic son Dominic, ran the Paris marathon on April 12 after overcoming injury and supporting her partner through a heart attack.

She ran the 26.2 mile race in seven hours after battling cramp and blistering temperatures in the French capital.

Speaking to The News after returning home, she said: “The marathon itself went well. It took me seven hours to complete the 26.2 miles — which was a bit longer than I had hoped.

“But after running in 22 degrees heat which I am not used to and getting cramp after seven miles I was just glad to finish and get my medal.

“Best of all I now look on target to raise almost £2,000 for Scottish Autism.” Caroline, who works at South Ayrshire Council as a project manager, looks after her six-year-old son Dominic who was diagnosed with autism three years ago.

She has taken part in charity runs before but never attempted a marathon and set about training for the mammoth task for months. What makes Caroline’s challenge even more remarkable is that she has had to overcome her partner Paul suffering from a heart attack as well as enduring injury problems herself.

“Paul is normally my running partner and was due to take part in the Paris Marathon too, but he is recovering after heart surgery earlier this year,” she explained.

Scottish Autism provides targeted, individual support focusing on different priorities within an individual’s life such as occupational, leisure and recreation, life skills, domestic skills, emotional support, coping with the impact of ASD, community activities. Karen Wilson, Scottish Autism’s fundraising manager, said; “Caroline is incredible for having completed such a huge challenge for Scottish Autism - we incredibly grateful to her. With support from Caroline and other star fundraisers we are able to help those diagnosed with autism to lead full and enriched lives and become valuable members of the community they live in.” Caroline’s Just Giving page is: https://www.justgiving.com/doingit4dom Caroline Morrison, who was inspired by her autistic son Dominic, ran the Paris marathon on April 12 after overcoming injury and supporting her partner through a heart attack.
