Tesco K.O. is not the end
A MAJOR supermarket chain has decided against building a new store in Barrhead.
But council regeneration bosses are pledging that they are down but not out after the preferred bidder - widely thought to be Tesco - pulled out of developing the proposed site behind Barrhead Sports Centre, pictured.
Despite the disappointment at the 11th hour pull out, the council is pledging to residents and businesses that the regeneration of the town centre will continue and they will be moving swiftly to get a new supermarket bidder for the town.
Regeneration convener, Councillor Tony Buchanan said: "We've been doing a tremendous amount of work across our town centres in recent years.
"That's in the face of an enormous financial downturn right across the UK.
"It is undoubtedly a disappointment to lose at such a late stage our preferred bidder for a supermarket in Barrhead.
"The job in hand is to get on with the job of pushing on with the regeneration work.
"We have already been able to deliver the brand new health centre and Adult Day Care facility.
"There's been money invested in major improvements to Cross Arthurlie Street and Main Street.
"The Main Street shopping arcade has been upgraded.
"We have also bought over the eyesore that was the Barrhead Hotel site and have plans in place for future development on the site.
"New much-needed office accommodation has also been developed in the town."
