But the dedicated mum grew up jealous of her family members in the troop – because she didn’t know that she could be a scout too.

Now the former Barrhead High School pupil has become one of the most recognisable faces in Barrhead, and has almost 30 years of experience in the scouts.

Janet is a group scout leader with the 1st Barrhead Scout Group, based out of Barrhead’s Scout hall on Arthurlie Street.

The group has a Beaver Colony, a Cub Pack, a Scout Troop and an Explorer Unit — and Janet is in charge of the lot.

As a day job Janet is a personal assistant and support worker with Enable Scotland, but she still manages to find the time to volunteer with kids on an almost nightly basis at the scout hall.

Taking about her experience in scouting, Janet said: “Scouting was part of my family long before I knew I could join. I have two brothers that were scouts. I was jealous of the stories they used to tell about the fun and adventurous activities they got to take part in.

“My first experience of scouting was going skiing in the 1980s with the scout Group and then playing the bagpipes for a church parade.

“Jump forward 20 years and I had a son who was then old enough to start Beaver scouts, and he was very keen to get into it.

“One week after he started I volunteered to stay and help. Then within a few months I had started the training to becoming a Beaver leader.

“Fast-forward 10 years and I’m now very proud to be the group scout leader and recently became a member of camp staff at Lapwing Lodge activity centre.” In the last three years Janet has been fighting tooth and nail to see the dilapidated scout hall restored to its former glory, after a leaky roof caused issues with dampness and created an environment that was considered not only unsuitable, but dangerous for the kids.

However, now the hall is back on its feet with a new roof, and all new kitchen.

She said: “It’s been a struggle over the last five years as our hall roof came into a state of disrepair but with the help of the district, parents and volunteers we are now back using it and in the process of turning it into a multi-use community hall. So if you have skills to help us please get in touch.

“Scouting has become a huge part of my life.

“Luckily I have been around scouting long enough to see ex-members bringing their children back to join beavers and hearing their stories of how scouting changed their lives.

“It is great that scouting is no longer scouting for boys but is now Scouting for girls and boys.” If you are interested in volunteering or sending your child to the group please contact Rob Murray on rob@paisleyanddistrict.org.uk
