But rather than only for December, the lights will be there throughout the winter to brighten up the start of 2015.

And there are hopes to do the same in Cross Arthurlie Street.

East Renfrewshire Council has paid for the £10,000 work out of the Barrhead Town Centre Resilience Fund, which funds improvements in the area.

Convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “These lights add a fabulous touch to Main Street and are proving very popular with local people.

“This is exactly what the Town Centre Resilience Fund is there for – to improve and enhance the town centre and encourage residents to use it for shopping, working and entertainment.

“It has already funded shopfront improvement grants, provided 26 permanent on-street car parking spaces and paid for lamppost banners to boost local businesses.

“The lights add a bit of sparkle for Christmas but I’m sure everyone will be delighted that these are winter enhancements and will stay in place to brighten up January and February.

“We hope to do the same in Cross Arthurlie Street as soon as some work is complete on replacing trees there early next year.

“It’s a brilliant time for Barrhead – there has been so much going on and it will be crowned by the opening of the fantastic new £3.8 million Barrhead Foundry early next year.” The Town Centre Resilience Fund is a community cash pot that is used to pay for improvements to keep Barrhead’s shops and businesses thriving.
