Organisers decided to “give it a miss” this year after committee members resigned due to internet abuse.

However the organisers themselves have been accused of being “unprofessional” in their handling of the situation online, despite page administrators apologising.

One local resident, Nichola Ann Williams, wrote to express her concerns saying: “Our hopes keep being let down by this committee , you wrote about trying to get the local people and businesses involved in this but the fact is this group have never had permission to do a display and also they made a comment that they won’t be bringing in a company who deal displays but would in fact be letting of the fireworks themselves but this isn’t in anyway safe for the local community.” The Facebook page set up to help organise and inform the public of the goings on behind the Barrhead Firework Display project also saw a massive decline in support as bickering between residents and organisers spread.

However the organiser behind the page, Tam Milan, has came out and stated that despite an apology, people will not let the issue go and allow the organising committee to get the job done.

He said: “A few people on the page thought I has been cheeky and I eventually apologised for what people thought I had done when really I had not been cheeky at all, or it was never intended to be cheeky.

“However even after the apology committee members continued to receive online abuse, and it got to the point that we thought ‘what’s the point?’.

“We have decided to give it a miss this year and concentrate on getting funding and permission for next year’s show, which we are determined to go ahead with.

“We are trying to do something to benefit the community and it makes it very difficult when you only get abuse for it.

“Ultimately we are trying to make Barrhead a better place and we have other ideas that the Cowan Park can be used for as it spends much of the time every year lying empty.” The firework display also came under heavy criticism after committee members called off the display on multiple different occasions, and moved the date further back into next year.

A proposal for Highland Games in the park has been muted as another project for the committee to undertake in the new year.

The fireworks display would have included shows and live music according to organisers.
