A BARRHEAD youngster has danced his way to success to become a world champion.

Antonio Crawford, 11, has just been crowned the under-12's World Champion Hip Hop and Street Dancer throwing his moves on the famous Blackpool dance floor.

The top dancer's mum, Lorraine said: "We had no expectations at all.

"There were a lot of really good dancers at the competition and I was not expecting Antonio to win at all, but it was a lovely surprise when he did."

The competition on Saturday, June 12 was tough and the competition was fierce so when the time came for the results the dancing star was not expecting much at all.

His mum said: "We were both really shocked when he made it through to the final and then he went on to win it - it was a huge shock, but a good one.

"When his name was called we didn't notice.

"They called his number out three times and Antonio was just sitting there looking around to see who the winner was - he didn't realise it was him."

Antonio, who attends Springhill Primary, only recently got involved with dancing and joined the Gillian Anderson Le Dance School three years ago. There he takes classes in hip hop, acrobatics, Latin, freestyle and street dance, regularly competing in UK-wide competitions.

He trains and rehearses his routines all throughout week after school and at the weekends ensuring his routine stays fresh and relaxed.

The secret to his success is hard work, dedication and keeping it fresh.

Lorraine is also certain that a lot of the credit should go to his dance teacher, Gillian, who is very close to Antonio and the whole family.

The mum-of-three said: "Antonio thinks Gillian is wonderful.

"She is really good with all the kids and they think the world of her."

Like any other young boy, Antonio enjoys going out on his bike and having fun playing with his friends.

And mum believes that is one of the main reasons he enjoys the competition. She said: "He likes meeting up with all the other dancers, because he now has lots of friends from all over the country because of his dancing."

The talented dancer doesn't see himself as being special, it is just something he really enjoys doing.

Lorraine added: "He was really pleased to win the world championships, very surprised, but very happy.

"We couldn't ask for any more, we are all very proud of him."
