NO WORKS CLASH PLEDGE

COUNCIL bosses have promise residents that roadworks on the town's two busiest streets will not clash.

Rumours are circulating in the town that the redevelopment of Cross Arthurlie Street will not be completed until September, which would be four months after the scheduled completion date.

But East Renfrewshire Council has shot down this speculation by insisting that the roadworks are running smoothly and will be finished on time.

At Thursday's Barrhead Community Council (BBC) meeting, members voiced their concerns that the timetable for enhancements to the Main Street will crossover with the redevelopment of Cross Arthurlie Street (pictured) which has taken a month longer than expected.

However, the council's roads team insist that this will not be the case and the work on each street will be carried out separately.

A council spokesman was keen to ease the worries of residents and explained that the workmen carrying out the redevelopment of Cross Arthurlie Street are the same team scheduled to install the parking bays and the de-deulling of Main Street.

He said: "The work on Main Street will not start until we have finished Cross Arthurlie Street to avoid further traffic delays.

"We expect to finish Cross Arthurlie Street by mid-June so that the Main Street works will begin after that and probably by the end of June."

Speaking after the BBC meeting, chairman Tommy Reilly said: "There has been a feeling for a long time about the de-duelling of the Main Street.

"Some people are thinking the road could end up quite narrow.

"But I am glad to hear that the council has said the road works in both streets will not be done at the same time.

"We are beyond the point of no return and they need to get it done.

"Some people are concerned about why the road workers aren't working weekends if they are behind schedule so the sooner all the road works are done the better it is for everyone."
