A TALENTED young actor performed the lead role of a nationwide production in front of friends and family at the weekend.

Kevin Guthrie has been thrilling audiences across the country with his mesmerising performances as Peter Pan in the critically acclaimed production currently touring the UK.

And on Saturday Kevin and the crew completed their extensive stint performing shows daily at the King's Theatre, in Glasgow.

Neilston boy Kevin, a second year student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, has told the News of his honour at playing regularly in front of sold out audiences, family, friends and old Barrhead acquaintances.

The 21-year-old said: "The shows have been great.

"There was a level of apprehension and nerves because of the technical side of the production but I am very proud of my performances.

"It has been incredible, I thought it was something that would take me longer to achieve in terms of my career.

"To appear the way I did on stage and see the whole place full was so amazing I was pumping with adrenalin."

The production which has been described by critics as 'Peter Pan with an edge' is an alternative version of the boy who refuses to grow up and looks at the darker side of the J M Barrie story.

Kevin insists the show can be enjoyed by people of all ages and is glad audiences have warmed to their version by respected director John Tiffany.

The former St Luke's High pupil said: "We have been able to tell people are really enjoying the show and the press coverage has been great.

"When I look out from the stage I can see people of all ages which is good because the show is for everybody, kids and adults.

"There are so many shocks and surprises it can really catch out the audience but we have won them over and everyone we have spoken to has been won over by it."

Kevin added: "Doing Peter Pan has really opened up doors for me that I didn't quite expect and it has given me a real platform to be seen by casting directors.

"It has been everything I expected it to be and more.

"To be able to do it and complete a run at the King's Theatre has surpassed everything I expected and is something I will never forget."

Kevin's former drama teachers, Amanda Gracie and Marieanne McGratton, were both impressed with his performance as Peter Pan.

A proud Amanda said: "Kevin has come a long way from playing Bugsy Malone in second year.

"It was great to see him on the stage and he has been a huge inspiration to the pupils at St Luke's who have seen first hand what can be achieved when you work hard at something."
