A TALENTED young family will be lighting up the stage this Christmas in a national production of Sleeping Beauty.

Lorna Cairns, 13, and little brother Andrew, 10, are set to don some crazy colourful costumes and paint smiles on their faces.

The duo will sing and dance alongside the rest of the chorus in the extravagent pantomime running to massive audiences this December at the SECC in Glasgow.

The Barrhead youngsters are thrilled to be involved in the show, citing their love for theatre and performing as the main reason they're taking part.

Lorna, who is in second year at Barrhead High, won last year's Barrhead Gala Talent Show for her tap dancing routine, and has trained rigorously in several forms of dance - including ballet and modern - since the age of three.

Also a keen actress, Lorna has also performed in several youth shows, and was involved in a local youth theatre until lack of funds caused it to fold.

Gutted by the thought of never performing again, Lorna and her family attended an open day for a muscial arts theatre group in Glasgow - not realising it was actually an audition to join the company.

Bowled over by Lorna's dancing skills, the group immediately offered her a place at an accelerated level - giving her a first class ticket to be part of this year's panto chorus line.

But brother Andrew hasn't always been a keen thespian.

The youngster, who attends Springhill Primary, was football mad, preferring kickabouts with his friends to singing and dancing on stage - until he saw his sister at her summer review.

Deciding that he could do the same, Andrew gave into his secret love for acting, and was over the moon when he went to an audition for GAMTA - and was offered a place at the same level as his sister.

Although both children are in different classes because of their ages, mum Alison, 43, is delighted that they are performing in such a well known show.

She said: "It's fantastic for them. Lorna's always loved to perform, so she was ecstatic when she was offered a place at the theatre school, especially at a higher level than usual.

"And Andrew - well, he's just happy that he can keep playing football with his pals on Saturdays, and then do the acting on Sundays.

"We were so surprised he got in - the audition day was absolutely packed, and we thought if anything, he'd be taken in at a basic level.

"We were happy to hear he'd been taken at a accelerated level as well - meaning they both get to perform in Sleeping Beauty.

" I'm just so proud of them both."

The pantomime runs from December 10 until December 24 at the SECC. Tickets are available online at www.secc.co.uk
