A BARRHEAD singing sensation will record her debut single and perform it live on a local radio station after winning a top competition.

Talented Kirsty MacLaren won the Search for a Star competition at a special show held at the Avenue Shopping Centre.

Kirsty wowed the audience and judges with her own version of Mariah Carey's Hero.

The 17-year old walked away with £250 to spend at the shopping centre and a recording session in the Riverview Studios in Busby.

She will also get a professional DVD recording her performance and she is booked to sing live on Pulse FM.

As well as these fabulous prizes she will be interviewed live on the Wednesday morning magazine show before she sings acapella live on air.

The recorded version of her song will also be played by the station for the next few months.

The former Barrhead High student has also just been accepted into the coveted Royal Scottish Society of Music and Drama and is due to start soon.

She said: "I am over the moon to have won.

"The standard was really high and it was the first time I had competed in anything like this so I really didn't expect to win.

"It was a brilliant night, I loved every minute of it and would love the chance to do it again.

"I am also really excited about doing live radio and I can't wait to hear my version of the song on air."

Judge Keiran Gillespie of Collusion Theatre was blown away by her stunning performance and added: "The competition was really tough.

"The talent was surprising and exciting but Kirsty edged it with her flawless vocals.

"She has an amazing range in her voice for someone so young and I am sure she will go far."

The Avenue Shopping Centre works in conjunction with the Barrhead community groups to help with various projects and they are looking for more singing stars for their competition next year.

Centre manager, Karl Holmes, said: "We are always striving to ensure our activity programme throughout the year is varied and exciting for the community and we hope our programme of events reflects that."
