TOWN'S PRAYERS FOR SOLDIER

A LOCAL lad is in hospital after being seriously injured in an explosion in Afghanistan.

Brave David Timmins, 28, from Neilston is believed to be badly hurt after the explosion on Sunday.

David who serves in the Royal Highland Fusiliers was on patrol when a bomb went off.

Army medics quickly flew David to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where is believed to be in a coma.

His parents Steve and Cathy Timmins are at their son's bedside keeping a vigil and are hoping that he pulls through.

Marie Boyle from Neilston, who knows the family, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.

"Everyone in the village is shocked - it really hits home when it is a local lad who is injured.

"I knew that David had been out in Afghanistan and that his family were worried sick about him.

"I hope he pulls through - he is a lovely lad."

Family friend John Graham added: "He loves the army life.

"We are all hoping with our hearts and head that David will pull through and come home safe and sound

"David and I debated for hours at times on the rights and wrongs of this war. My feelings are so up and down at this moment as he lies in a coma."

The latest explosion in Afghanistan comes after seven UK personnel soldiers were killed in as many days during Operation Panther's Claw in Helmand.

They are Lance Corporal David Dennis, 29, Private Robert Laws, 18, Lance Corporal Dane Elson, 22, Captain Ben Babington-Browne, 27, and Trooper Christopher Whiteside, 20.
