IT was double trouble for a national bank when quids-in punters queued up to exploit an ATM malfunction.

On Wednesday last week (June 24) a Clydesdale Bank hole-in-the-wall was paying out £20 for every £10 requested and passing shoppers were quick to take advantage.

The queue at the machine which is located outside Neilston Post Office at one point throbbed to at least 30 people.

One onlooker said: 'When I walked past I wondered what all the fuss was about as a load of people were hanging around.

'There was a big queue outside the bank and then someone was saying "the bank is paying out double" and he had a big smile on his face, but I don"t use that bank myself.'

Another passer-by said the shoppers queuing to use the bank showed their community spirit by sharing the good fortune.

He said: 'It didn"t look like anyone was being greedy, most people were just taking out twenty or thirty quid.

'There was loads of people hanging about it and it looked like the whole of Neilston was down using the bank.'

A spokesman for the bank said they are looking into claiming the money back.

He said: 'We don"t service the ATM, because it is on a remote site, it is serviced by a third party. When the operator went to replenish the machine they put £20 notes in the £10 drawer and this is the reason why people were getting double money when withdrawing.

'When we were told of the mistake the machine was closed immediately.

'Legally no-one has any legal right to the extra money given out by the machine.

'The people who got double the money will know it is more than they asked for.

'We can identify anyone who made a withdrawal and we will take steps to ensure we do receive the money.

'To anyone who wishes to show good will knowing they got money out in error we would be very happy if they handed the money back but we don"t know how many people will do that.'

The ATM on Main Street, Neilston, was back up and running first thing the following morning.
