BOSSES at Barrhead Travel say their gender pay gap is one of the lowest in the industry after revealing a 1.4 per cent disparity in their retail stores.

However, despite a majority of management positions being assigned to women, Barrhead Travel still reported an overall disparity of around 11 per cent between men and women.

The figures do show, however, that 70 per cent of the travel company’s directors are women.

The company’s overall pay gap of 11 per cent means that female workers continue to earn less than their male counterparts on average, despite making up nearly eight out of 10 of the firm’s total employees.

Sharon Munro, president of Barrhead Travel, said: “We acknowledge that our pay gap is one of the lowest in the travel industry. “While the majority of our senior management team are women, our median gap of 11 per cent demonstrates the overall distribution of males within the business who are predominantly in senior roles, particularly within our IT and finance teams.

“We are proud that 67 per cent of the management team are women, which reflects concerted efforts in our business to develop and support our workforce.

“I am a strong believer in nurturing our grass roots talent, irrespective of gender.”

Despite falling short of gender pay equality, Barrhead Travel does fare much better in recent results than other travel firms.

Holiday company TUI reported a gap of 2.6 per cent between men and women’s pay in their retail stores and a whopping 31.4 per cent overall across their business.

Elsewhere, STA Travel pay women 13.2 per cent less on average.

And, at Thomas Cook, the figure stands at 18.7 per cent.
