A BARRHEAD schoolgirl was shortlisted for an award in 2008 after she secured funding for a local carers group.
St Luke’s High pupil Leanne McWilliams was nominated for the East Renfrewshire Neighbourhood Watch Young Citizen of the Year accolade in recognition of her hard work.
The first year pupil gave a speech to the local Rotary Club about her involvement in the Young Carers group.
Rotary members were so impressed they donated a whopping £5,000 to the cause.
In an interview for the school magazine, Leanne explained the role of young carers.
She said at the time: “They care for elderly and young people and they keep them company and go shopping and help them. I feel very happy about the donation. It will help the young carers a lot.”
The Neighbourhood Watch Award highlighted those aged between 10 and 25 who were making a valuable contribution to their community.
St Luke’s headteacher Patricia Scott said: “Leanne is a shining example of all that a young person can be.”
