members of the Barrhead Men’s Shed have thanked people who helped their group bank a £5,000 boost.

The worthy cause, which gives elderly and retired people the chance to beat social isolation by working together on creative projects, received the cash from Barrhead Housing Association (BHA) as part of a participatory budgeting event.

It was one of seven community groups which shared BHA’s funding pot of £30,000, with members of the public asked to cast votes on which projects should benefit.

Bill Core, a founding member of the Barrhead Men’s Shed, said the extra cash will make a huge difference to his group.

He added: “I want to thank everyone who took part in the vote because, without them and this money, we couldn’t continue doing what we do.

“This funding means the Men’s Shed can keep going. It will go to our running costs and improves our means of buying resources for the people we work with.

“It’s difficult for us to generate this kind of money by ourselves.”

Based in Robertson Street, the project brings together men and, more recently, women to take part in recreational activities in a social environment.
