Barrhead and Neilston youngsters learned how to stay safe thanks to an ongoing event at Arthurlie House 10 years ago.

Around 1,500 Primary 7 pupils from all 24 schools in East Renfrewshire took part in the hands-on personal safety lessons in Barrhead.

Together, the school kids learned about a variety of topics.

The lessons included valuable information regarding stranger danger, internet safety, drugs and alcohol awareness.

Fire safety and road safety were also touched upon.

The event was organised by the Magic Wand project along with a range of services including the council’s road safety and community safety staff.

Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were also on hand to offer their expertise before and during the lessons.

The 2007 event was the first time Safety in the Park had run in Barrhead.

Up until that time, it had been held in Rouken Glen Park.

It was estimated around 8,500 P7 pupils had taken part in the project since it began in 1999.
