BARRHEAD children have been set a challenge to read six books this summer.

The task was spelled out to little ones by a professional storyteller at the Foundry.

Ron Fairweather left kids enthralled as he brought books to life at the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge workshop.

This year’s theme – Animal Agents – was based on a detective agency staffed by all kinds of clever animals who were out to crack a case with a little help from their new-found friends.

Children’s illustrator Tony Ross has designed collecting cards which feature the Animal Agents characters and fun activities for kids to take part in as they progress through the challenge.

Adele Mills, senior community investment manager at Tesco Bank, said: “Reading for pleasure is a fantastic way of spending some enjoyable time during the summer holidays, so we’re delighted that children from East Renfrewshire got involved through their local library.

“The challenge aims to inspire 40,000 children across Scotland to participate during their break from school and events like this will undoubtedly have a positive effect on their future.”

Designed to inspire kids and show them how much fun they can have by reading, the session was organised by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust.

Giffnock Library hosted a similar event recently.

Scott Simpson, head of library and information services in East Renfrewshire, said: “We are delighted to be launching the challenge in our libraries. Year on year the number of children completing the challenge increases.

“Families can enjoy the holidays at their community library. As well as participating in the challenge, we have a terrific line-up of summer events - and it’s all free.”
