CELEBRATIONS were plentiful in Barrhead in 2007 as an important member of the community turned 21.

Barrhead Housing Association (BHA) reached its landmark birthday and held a fun day for the town to mark the occasion.

The event, held at Dunterlie Community Centre, kicked off with a conference with speakers from Tenants Information Service, Community Links Scotland and the housing association.

The group welcomed the association’s first ever chairman, Gilbert Baird, and longest-serving tenant, Helen Lewis, who moved into her home in 1986.

Presentations were made to the special guests.

That year also marked the group’s first ‘Good Neighbour’ award, named after former chairman John McIntyre.

Robert Warren received the award for his hard work and contribution to the community.

There was plenty of fun and games to keep the family entertained.

A football tournament was also organised, pitting St John’s, St Thomas’s, St Mark’s, Carlibar and Cross Arthurlie primaries against each other.

It was St John’s Primary who came out on top.

Youngsters also enjoyed face painting, a magic show and sumo wrestling with larger than life suits.

BHA director Shirley Robison said the day was a great success.
