TRAFFIC management was in the spotlight as a construction firm invited people to have their say on plans for 274 new homes in Barrhead.

Taylor Wimpey West Scotland said it is “encouraged” by a community consultation which provided details of the company’s proposals to create a major residential development on greenbelt land near Springfield Road.

Organisers say they received positive feedback from the majority of those who attended the event at Barrhead Foundry.

However, some residents were concerned about the impact the development could have on the rest of the town.

One man, who asked not to be named, told the Barrhead News: “Traffic is the main thing – there will be implications. It’s about the impact on resources. Transport is absolutely key.”

Another resident said: “I’m for the development but I’d like to know if there are provisions for the impact that more houses would have on the roads.”

The make-up of the development, which will include “associated engineering and infrastructure works”, was also a big topic of conversation, as were classroom spaces.

While a lack of bungalows was questioned, there was support for Taylor Wimpey’s plans to earmark 15 per cent of the site for affordable housing.

Stephen Andrew, technical director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, said: “We were delighted to see that so many members of the local community took the opportunity to visit the public consultation event for our proposed development in Barrhead with around 60 people attending.

“We were equally encouraged to learn that many of the people who attended were in favour of the proposed development and thought it would bring benefits to the area.

“In general terms, the provision of new homes was welcomed, with many people keen to know more about the style of homes that may be on offer.

“The wider economic benefits for existing shops and businesses were also recognised as positive outcomes of our proposed development.

“We had a valuable discussion with local residents on issues relating to traffic impact and we would like to thank them for their input in this regard.

“During this discussion, we also took the opportunity to show the wider benefits of the masterplan, including the provision of improved bus services and a new rail station.”

The site targeted by Taylor Wimpey is one of three Strategic Development Opportunities promoted in East Renfrewshire Council’s Local Development Plan.

Open spaces, play areas and landscaping, incorporating the Spierston Burn, are part of the plans.

Members of the public have until July 14 to submit feedback to Taylor Wimpey before the firm submits a planning application.
