A BARRHEAD school will change its name after the summer break.

Springhill and Auchenback Primary will be renamed Hillview Primary after it emerged as the resounding choice among those connected with the school.

The primary made the announcement after East Renfrewshire councillors gave the plan the go-ahead following weeks of consultation involving pupils, parents and teachers.

The decision-making process – which included assemblies, meetings and voting – showed every staff member, 80 per cent of students and 65 per cent of mums and dads were in favour of an alternative title.

It is thought the school opted to change its name because staff believe the current moniker – created by the merger of Auchenback and Springhill Primaries in 2012 – is too long.

Three names were put forward by pupils for consideration – Barrhead Primary, Springhill Primary and Hillview Primary.

The school’s pupil council then helped head teacher Jannette Black to review the pros and cons, before registering all votes.

Ms Black told the Barrhead News: “The children are excited about the new school name being in place for the start of the new session.

“Given the involvement our pupils had in deciding the name it will be a lasting legacy for all of them to look back on in the years ahead.

“Changing the school name provides us with a fantastic opportunity to forge ahead with our exciting plans for the future of the school as we aim to provide the very best opportunities for all our pupils to achieve their goals.”

East Renfrewshire Council confirmed the school’s uniforms will also be altered.

This will be done in phases to allow youngsters and parents to have their say in its design and make it easier for arising costs to be met in a “staged and more affordable manner”.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, convener for education, said: “I’m delighted that this fantastic school will now have its own unique identity.

“The pupils, and wider school community, have clearly expressed their wish for the school to be renamed.

“Changing the name to Hillview Primary is a great choice and I welcome this decision.”

However, not all have welcomed the move, with a number of parents thought to have voted against the decision because they view it as an unnecessary use of resources.

One member of the Springhill and Auchenback Primary Parent Council said: “We’d rather the money was spent on our children’s education.”
