CLEVER kids from schools in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire went head to head with others from across Scotland in the final of a prestigious quiz.

Pupils from Springhill and Auchenback Primary, in Barrhead, and St Catherine’s Primary, in Paisley, travelled to Edinburgh on Monday for the Euroquiz event in the Scottish Parliament’s debating chamber.

They pitted their wits against other finalists from 31 schools in an exciting contest that posed a selection of taxing questions.

Flying the flag for Renfrewshire were Angel Lee, Rosie McKenna, Megan Waugh and Eve Muir.

And proudly representing East Renfrewshire were Lily Burns, Jessica Ewing, Cameron Hepburn and Jamie Jack.

Although the local contingent enjoyed the experience, they were ultimately unsuccessful.

Euroquiz, which takes place every year, sees teams of pupils working together to broaden their knowledge of European history, geography, sport, culture, languages and the European Union.

The pupils had debated their way through a series of heats to represent their local authority area in the final.

Deputy Presiding Officer and Euroquiz quizmaster Christine Grahame MSP said: “Euroquiz is a brilliant way for young people to learn more about Europe and Scotland’s place in the world.

“And, with European elections and Brexit being debated at breakfast tables in many households across Scotland, it was an exciting and topical quiz for the hundreds of young people who had been studying hard for the finals at Holyrood.”

The Scottish European Educational Trust has been running the quiz since 1993 and the finals have been held at the Scottish Parliament for the past nine years.

The event is sponsored by the European Parliament and the Scottish Government.

Runner-up in this year’s Renfrewshire heat was St Peter’s Primary, of Paisley, with Busby Primary securing second place in East Renfrewshire.
