YOUNG people in Barrhead who are out of work are being offered help to kick-start their career prospects.

Street League - a youth sports and employability organisation - is running a 10-week training programme and football academy in the town to provide the younger generation with the skills they need to achieve their goals.

The course is open to those aged between 16 and 24 and offers the chance to build their CV, work in teams, improve their fitness and earn a qualification.

Starting on Tuesday, May 30, the programme will run in-house at three different venues for six weeks before finishing with four weeks of work experience.

Auchenback Resource Centre will host sessions every Wednesday, while classes will take place at Barrhead Community Museum each Friday.

Pro-Soccer Glasgow, which is located at Rouken Glen Park, Giffnock, will be used as a base on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Eilidh Quinn, Street League progressions co-ordinator, hopes the programme will be a game-changer for young people.

She said: “Young people are offered a training allowance plus travel expenses and will work towards an SCQF Level 4 qualification, while being supported to move into work or education.

“Most participants benefit from an increase in confidence, getting into a positive routine, developing their skills and knowledge to get ready for the world of work.

“We have a high success rate in moving our participants on to a positive destination.”

Organisers say around 40 per cent of the Street League timetable is made up of sports content involving football, basketball, tennis and badminton.

The rest of the 20-hour-per-week schedule incorporates employability group work focusing on interview skills, application forms and job searching.
