THE Scottish Conservatives have gained their first seat in Barrhead since 1992.
Paul Aitken received the second-highest number of first preference votes in the Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor ward.
He was second only to long-serving independent candidate Danny Devlin who outshot the 1,415 quota of votes needed for election with 1,840 votes.
Cllr Aitken is the first Conservative candidate to be elected to represent the town since Jannette Muir was voted into Renfrewshire Council in 1992 before East Renfrewshire came into existence four years later.
New SNP candidate Angela Convery has taken the place of fellow party member and former Barrhead councillor Tommy Reilly, while Labour's Betty Cunningham has retained her seat.
The breakdown of the first preference votes each politician received is as follows:
Cllr Devlin (Ind) – 1,840
Cllr Aitken (Con) – 1,297
Cllr Convery (SNP) – 1,199
Cllr Cunningham (Lab) – 1,020
More to follow.
