A BARRHEAD man has denied repeatedly spitting on a police officer and a paramedic.

Daniel Maka, of Braeside Drive, is said to have assaulted the public servants in the street near his home on Sunday, April 9.

The 37-year-old was held in police custody overnight before appearing handcuffed in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court the next day.

He faces four charges over his alleged conduct – two of assault, one of threatening behaviour and one of resisting police officers.

Prosecutors claim he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner, which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm, by shouting, swearing, challenging a paramedic to a fight and spitting on a police car, in breach of Section 38(1) of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010.

He is also accused of breaking Section 1(1) of the Emergency Workers (Scotland) Act 2005 by trying to punch the paramedic and spitting on his head.

And he is also said to have assaulted two police officers at Helen Street Police Office, in Glasgow’s Govan area.

The complaint against him alleges he resisted, obstructed or hindered the officers, by struggling with them and throwing himself to the ground, in breach of Section 90(2)(a) of the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012.

He faces a final charge of breaking Section 90(1)(a) of the same act by assaulting a police officer by repeatedly spitting on his face.

Mr Maka denied all charges against him and a trial date was set for July this year.

Sheriff Seith Ireland bailed Mr Maka, who will appear again for a pre-trial hearing in June.
