A BARRHEAD community project is offering green-fingered residents a helping hand – by giving away gardening supplies for free.

A special event, dubbed Get Yourself Growing, will be staged at Barrhead Water Works next week, with gardeners able to pick up leftover supplies to help them spruce up their surroundings or grow their own fruit and veg.

Items up for grabs will include plant pots, shuttle trays, propagators, bamboo canes, jute landscape fabric, tree guards, compost and woodchips.

The event is aimed at people of all ages who want to liven up their green spaces, as well as those who are starting out on their first gardening project.

While all products are free, the Water Works team would welcome donations.

John Shelton, East Renfrewshire Council’s Green Network project officer, said: “Visitors can take what they need and pay as they feel fit. All proceeds will go towards the Water Works Action Group for future events and activities.

“If you don’t have your own space, why not adopt one of our concrete pipe planters and start growing now?

“If you need some growing supplies for an outdoor or gardening project or need some advice to help get started, then please feel free to come along.”

Barrhead Water Works won a public vote in 2013 to become Grow Wild’s flagship site in Scotland.

It has since undergone a dramatic transformation from derelict sewage works to a community-friendly wild flower space.

The makeover was led by Ethe local authority, alongside Barrhead High School, with help from Young Enterprise Scotland, the Coach House Trust and Barrhead Men’s Shed.

The Get Yourself Growing event takes place on Friday, April 28, from 10am to 2pm.

Those interested in taking part are asked to email a short description of what they would like to do with the gardening items to info@barrheadwaterworks.co.uk.
