BARRHEAD Badminton Club members hit new heights when they ziplined across the River Clyde for Breast Cancer Care.

The intrepid group of women vowed to fly over the stretch of water from 150ft above on behalf of the charity after one of its players suggested the idea during a practise session.

A team of 10 ladies – who varied in age from those in their late 50s to pensioners in their early 80s – raised over £5,000 by clambering up to the top of the zipline and buckling in for an “amazing” experience.

Evelyn McKirkle, 70, from Barrhead, was one of those who overcame her fear of heights.

Having played badminton with the other women for more than 30 years, Evelyn was confident their team spirit would see every zipliner complete the challenge – and so it proved.

Evelyn said: “It was a fantastic day and not one of us bottled out.

“I was worried sick. There was an ex-SAS guy who was up the top of the tower with us. He kept us all calm and joking.

“A woman called Margaret Thomson said she would like to do a zipwire across the Clyde for Breast Cancer Care and another nine senior ladies said we’d join her.

“She had nobody to do it and we all went, ‘We’ll do it!’ “It was a bit scary at times because it was 150ft up. I’d do it again in a minute, it was absolutely amazing!”

Barrhead Badminton Club’s senior members meet at Barrhead Foundry every Monday and Wednesday morning for their session on the court.
